Willy Brandt, Bonn, 1987
Willy Brandt, former Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany
Photographed by Alfred Steffen on assignment for TEMPO magazine – one of the first celebrity portraits of his career. Steffen was 23 years old and so nervous that he could hardly sleep the night before the shoot.
The portrait was taken during an interview in Bonn: one hour for the conversation, three minutes for the photograph. In that short time, he captured 23 frames – three in landscape format. One of those images was chosen for a double-page spread in TEMPO magazine.
This photograph marks the beginning of Steffen’s career and his unmistakable ability to capture personality and moment within just a few seconds.
