MIDNIGHT CHECKOUT AT CHELSEA HOTEL, 1987 — Martin Kippenberger

In January 1987, I photographed Martin Kippenberger in Cologne for a city feature in TEMPO magazine. At the time, he was staying at the Hotel Chelsea — and naturally wanted to be photographed there.

My idea was to wrap him in a bedsheet and stage him like a ghost in front of the hotel. Kippenberger thought that was a bad idea. A pillow, he said, would be entirely sufficient. He was right.

Before that, there were, of course, one or two beers at Café Central. The resulting shoot belongs to my early portraits — less staging, more situation, open to the moment and to better ideas than one’s own.
